amish cinnamon bread

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 50-60 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Intensity: Easy

Ingredients:

For the Bread:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk (or 2 cups milk + 2 tablespoons white vinegar, mixed and set aside for 5 minutes)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

For the Cinnamon-Sugar Swirl:

  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9×5-inch loaf pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Swirl:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the 2/3 cup granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and 2 cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
    • Mix in the buttermilk (or soured milk) until well combined.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Assemble the Bread:
    • Pour a quarter of the batter into each of the prepared loaf pans, spreading it out evenly.
    • Sprinkle a quarter of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the batter in each pan.
    • Repeat with another layer of batter, followed by another layer of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the cinnamon-sugar through the batter.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaves comes out clean.
    • If the tops of the loaves are browning too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil during the last 15-20 minutes of baking.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Remove the loaves from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes.
    • Carefully remove the loaves from the pans and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Note: Amish cinnamon bread is a wonderfully moist and sweet quick bread with a delightful cinnamon-sugar swirl. It’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or as a sweet snack. Serve slices plain or with a bit of butter. Enjoy!
