Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 25-30 minutes

Total Time: 40-45 minutes

Intensity: Easy

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

  1. Prepare Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, and dried thyme (if using). Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Cook Hamburger Steaks:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add the unsalted butter and sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and golden brown, about 10 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes to create a roux.
    • Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme (if using). Adjust the seasoning to taste.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over the top. Let the steaks simmer in the gravy for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, along with your favorite vegetables.

Note: This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a cozy dinner. The rich onion gravy complements the juicy hamburger steaks, making it a family favorite. Enjoy!
