Ingredients

Spaghetti:

  • 12 oz (340g) spaghetti pasta
  • Water for boiling
  • Salt

Meat Sauce:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Optional Garnish:

  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped
  • Grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.
    • Drain the pasta and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
    • Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings:
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce.
    • Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
    • Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to combine, ensuring the pasta is well coated with the sauce.
    • Serve hot, garnished with chopped fresh basil or parsley and grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
