Tennessee Onions

Ingredients:

  • 3 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup crushed Ritz crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare Onions:
    • Arrange the onion slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. If necessary, overlap the onions slightly to fit them all in.
  3. Add Cream and Seasonings:
    • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the onion slices.
    • Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Add Cheeses:
    • Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the onions.
  5. Add Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix the crushed Ritz crackers (or breadcrumbs) with the melted butter until well combined.
    • Sprinkle the cracker mixture evenly over the top of the cheese.
  6. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
    • Serve hot as a side dish.
