wonton soup recipe

Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes Yields: 4 servings

For the Wontons:

  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped shrimp
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 package wonton wrappers (about 40 wrappers)
  • Small bowl of water (for sealing wontons)

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 2 cups baby spinach or bok choy, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Prepare the Wonton Filling:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine ground pork, chopped shrimp, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and white pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  2. Assemble the Wontons:
    • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean, flat surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the filling into the center of the wrapper.
    • Dip your finger in the bowl of water and moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal tightly.
    • Bring the two corners of the triangle together, overlapping slightly, and press to seal. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.
  3. Prepare the Soup Base:
    • In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil over medium-high heat.
    • Add soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. Reduce the heat to medium and let the broth simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Cook the Wontons:
    • Carefully add the assembled wontons to the simmering broth. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the wontons float to the surface and the filling is cooked through.
  5. Add Vegetables:
    • Add the sliced green onions and baby spinach or bok choy to the soup. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
  6. Season and Serve:
    • Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
    • Ladle the wonton soup into bowls, ensuring each serving has a good amount of wontons and vegetables.
    • Serve hot and enjoy!
